Family just makes me want to give Thanks. Yeah. Like that.

We all have them.Family. And for the most part I really do love my family. But the whole expectations of joy and good cheer and shiny happy faces bullshit everyone puts on each other. Oy! Too Freaking Much Pressure.

The 'Rent got a cold.
We both got a cold.
We both had to go on Antibiotics to get well.
The 'Rent had to go on a second round (compromised immune system and all).
DO WE TAKE THEM?
DO WE GET BETTER?
No, we do not.

Then we complain and whine and whimper and expect everyone else to do everything else for us and do it with a smile.

Take me for instance. We are going to the larger family gathering. I ordered cheesecakes that are TO DIE FOR, and got LOTS of wine to make it through the day because I get to spend my Thanksgiving being the 'Rent Wrangler.
Last night I get informed that SHE is going to make a pecan pie.
We have TWO HUGE cheesecakes SHE HAS COMMITTED TO MAKE A PIE.
And then stares at me, and says she has to make the crust.
So I stare back, and she keeps staring at me.
So I cave and tell her I will make the crust.
No "thank you."
No, "I appreciate it."
Just assumes I will do it, like it is my job SINCE SHE SAID SHE WAS MAKING A %#y%#% PIE!
For some reason my crust is UBER soft and won't hold together well and then too soft to roll out properly.
So then she stands there and says, "I have to make another crust."
And stares at me.
And stares at me.
And stares at me.
I clean up my mess, tell her, "Good luck" and leave.
She gets her crust made and then she can't get it into the pie plate so I have to go do that.
AGAIN I am struck with WHY AM I DOING THIS WHEN I BOUGHT CHEESECAKES?
The pie crust gets put into the plate, then crimped by yours truly.
She makes the pie and then tells me it doesn't look right.

Um. You REALLY don't want to go down this road with me. Because I am holding on to my shit by a thread and I am about to go totally crazy on you.
So shut up and deal.

YOU MADE THE COMMITMENT. I AM NOT GOING TO MEET ALL OF YOUR PROMISES YOU OLD BAT!

So we have two BEAUTIFUL professionally made cheesecakes, wine (of which yours truly will be partaking liberally) and a pie.

I can only image what tomorrow will bring. We already are showing our ass and we have a WHOLE holiday to get through. I love my sibling and her children, but I really wish I could run away to Maui or Guam, or Siberia. Anywhere but a Thanksgiving with the 'Rent and her crappy tude.

  1. I love it when I read anything you've written that involves this string of words, "... YOU OLD BAT!"

    Happy Thanksgiving (belated)!
